Lifting A Patient's Spirits With Song
I am one of the BWH dietitians who works with some of the oncology patients at BWH. A patient of mine, who I have known for well over a year, has been admitted to 7A numerous times, and his particular admission in the fall was prolonged for one to two months. He loves to sing and enjoys karaoke very much, so I started "Karaoke Fridays" on 7A during his stay. I would bring my guitar in on Fridays, and the patient would sing along to his favorite songs. We also would play videos on YouTube, and he would sing along to some of his favorite bands. A few nurses would join us every Friday and dance as well. Even though it was only 10-15 minutes out of the day, this lifted his spirits, and he looked forward to it every Friday. Even the nurses taking care of him noticed a difference in his mood for a few days after his karaoke sessions.
